VIOLET HARTLEY DESIGNS

PRINTED BY HAND IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Violet’s process creating her unique designs follows a more traditional path than the modern techniques favoured by mass produced brands.

Firstly, Violet hand draws all her designs, then transfers them onto a silk screen or hand carved into woodblocks before hand printing onto fabric.

Years of experience using traditional methods, and not a computer or machine in sight!

Each scarf is lovingly and carefully crafted using time honoured methods. Because of this bespoke process, no two items are ever exactly the same. While some look for conformity and blandness, Violet embraces the variations in colour and intensity making every piece unique.

As you might expect, since Violet doesn’t just push a button, these techniques take time, but hope you’ll agree, the results are worth the wait.

Violet’s passion for her creations shines through, not just in the hand made techniques, but also the raw products, natural fibres such as linen, khadi cotton, silk and Australian merino wool.

Where possible the majority of the fabrics used are hand loomed, this choice is a reflection of Violet’s strong affiliation and love of nature, hence her designs predominantly feature birds, trees and foliage.

Her travels through India to source new fabrics and trims enables Violet to work with local artisans and companies to produce amazing fabrics and ensures centuries old skills and techniques such as hand looming are supported and continue to carry on as the world crashes forward on a path to mass produced greyness.

Continuing to support a more traditional approach to making objects will enable handmade items to stand the test of time as opposed to the short life-cycle approach of most mass produced brands.
